An Indispensable Map that Sets the Standard for Others! Nov 09, 2007 This was the first Berndtson map I'd ever owned and I found it indispensable. Right after landing, I grabbed my shades, sunblock, a bottle of water, and walked my way around a good part of Madrid for two weeks with the help of this map. To me, there's nothing more annoying than struggling with a large, paper map with tiny print, while I'm on the go. This map is easy enough to use that you can read it while walking due to its form and layout.
First of all, with its oversized print and color-coded layout, it's very easy to read at a glance. No more squinting. Landmarks, neighborhoods, and subway stops are clearly marked.
Second, it contains mini-maps of Segova and Toledo. As we sat on a bus for Segovia, my skeptical travel partner wondered aloud about how to get her bearings in Segovia. I said that I thought my map contained a guide to the town, she grumbled that what I had was a map of Madrid, NOT of Segovia. Suprised as I unfurled my map and triumphantly handed it to her, she exclaimed, "this is a REALLY good map!" Very handy if you just want a quick general guide for a brief day trip to Segovia and Toledo.
Third, its laminated and oversized, which means it's easy to fold and keep neat. No more torn or soggy maps, no more struggling to re-fold it back into some semblance of order, and no more splitting at the folds after constant use.
Fourth of all, because it is laminated, I've used it to sit on dirty or wet surfaces, as a picnic tablecloth (just wipe clean!), as a fan in the 100+ degree heat of Madrid in July, and as an umbrella during an unexpected summer rainstorm. You just can't get any better than that!
Now, whenever I travel, I always look for Berndtson/Borch's laminated maps. Although visitors staying for longer may wish to buy a more detailed street map for Madrid and surrounding areas, this one did me just fine for 2 weeks of walking around Madrid, Segovia, and Toledo. To me, it paid for itself 10 times over. I HIGHLY recommend it.
